Havana's Phat Santa

PARADE

by Donna Johnson

Upon seeing the disappointment on the little faces this past November Donna Johnson went to the Chamber of Commerce and requested they relinquish the Santa Parade to her.  They agreed, glad to have someone from the community to step in and take over this project.  So she is running with her ideas and its growing into quite an event. The theme of the parade is "A CHILDS MAGICAL CHRISTMAS" and it will be held on Saturday November 29th at 10 a.m. Parade line-up at 8 at am behind New Central School.

Donna has contacted local businesses with parade sponsorship opportunities for the event and at present F.P.S., Inc. has agreed to participate as a major parade sponsor.

a new step toward the development of local events...

Magicians, Jugglers, a special guest appearance from Mickey Mouse and some other childhood favorites are bound to thrill young and old alike.  At present she is working with Becky Vanderveen on securing 25 elf hats (which Becky and some friends are knitting) and Donna is making the 25 elf costumes that are needed for this day of fun and cheer. She has invited over 50 high and jr. high school bands to participate in the parade and hired the CSJA judges to judge their performances.  She has also been in touch with Lee Davis from WAND to announce for us that day and also presently working on a surprise announcer as well.

ALSO...she's contacted WMBD General Manager and he tells her that if the parade is as big an event as she thinks it will be, air time and a camera crew will be here that day.  Think about the fun we'll all have while drinking hot cider, eating hot dogs and enjoying the parade that's bound to last around 2 hours or more.  In Donnas opinion, which is indeed only an opinion, Havana deserves this!  We need to allow our children the opportunity to feel that excitement as it grows in their hearts and we need to see it developed into that yelling and jumping excitement when the little ones see Santa arrive on his new float!  In producing a parade you must treat it like any other production...building to the final entry (which is Santa) and making it as big and exciting as it can possibly be.  Donna Says that her one goal is to achieve the WOW effect...to do that the parade must be bigger, bolder, more musical, more colorful then ever before!  This may seem unreal to some, but its a definite possibility as Donna states on a regular basis.  The idea of this only grows in the mind, then on paper, then on fact as it takes shape.  If anyone would like to help in any way, please feel free to contact her at (309)546-2575.  Any ones help of any kind is welcomed by her as right there are only a couple people working on a few areas of the parade.  Thank you for your time...
