62644.com has always been supportive of our deployed troops and their families. Sure we have gathered and sent a lot of needed items all over the world to them but it was not those items that was in the minds of the members of the 1144th Transportation Unit.

During our little gathering on Main Street (Hangin With Heroes), Friday, May 30th, I was busy taking photos when I heard Phil Perkins clear his throat in that unmistakable official manner. The next thing I heard was my name called and upon turning this is what I saw...

I knew immediately by the look in his eye that this was no longer Phil Perkins, Havana resident and Firefighter who I have known for quite some time. The man I was facing was SSG Phillip Perkins officially representing the 1144th.

Freedom Salute Award

SSG Perkins spoke about both of his tours in Iraq and the personal feelings of being away from home and family for him and his men. This is a powerful emotional state which Perkins praised 62644.com with being a big factor in greatly easing these feelings of missing home for not only deployed troops from the immediate area but for most troops to see things as simple as a hometown basketball game. He spoke of the joy it brought to them to be able to visit home on 62644.com after a long day and see friends or family.

My heart was in my throat and not sure where my mind was. I was and am still shocked by the words of SSG Perkins when he said that he and all the deployed troops were very thankful for the little taste of home in a far off land and wanted to present the website a token of their appreciation, The Freedom Salute Medallion. I was in the presence of 7 truly great American Heroes and they were giving me an award, there was something wrong with that picture in my mind, but to say the least I was very humbled, extremely honored, and totally speechless.

I can only say that I am extremely proud to receive this award on behalf of 62644.com. I wish there could have been so much more done for our deployed troops and their families. For me that will always remain a job not completed. To have been surprised with this in the company of those true American Heroes from all different eras of deployments was very humbling for me. I will cherish this always as a reminder of a job that will never be completed.

FREEDOM SALUTE HISTORY:

The Freedom Salute Campaign is one of the largest Army National Guard recognition endeavors in history, designed to publicly acknowledge Army National Guard Soldiers and those who supported them during the President’s call to duty for Operations Noble Eagle, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom.

In December of 2003, the Army National Guard launched the "Freedom Salute Campaign," an unprecedented program designed to recognize Army National Guard Soldiers as well as their families and others who have supported them as they answered the call to duty both at home and abroad. Francis Harvey, secretary of the Army, said the goal of the campaign is to recognize those who make Soldiers’ service possible. “Our Soldiers could not answer their noble calling of defending the values that have made our country great – this call to duty – without the support of those from whom they draw so much strength,” Harvey said.
