Not much has held Cory Miller back; not even the physical disabilities induced by a birthing accident; not even the trauma of being forced to witness the murder of his own mother. Only one thing in Cory’s life has held him back from living the life of a normal 14-year-old teenage boy, two unprovoked and vicious physical attacks on him by five individuals in the light of day on the streets of Havana, Illinois. On October 7, 2008, I wrote a story titled “Streets of Fear”, telling the story of these attacks on Cory. The story was picked up and further publicity was given to this sad situation by The Peoria Journal Star, The Pekin Times, The State Journal Register, and a number of disability support publications nationwide. On November 1, 2008, the Peoria Journal Star reported, “Three juveniles face criminal charges in Mason County after allegedly attacking a 14-year-old disabled boy.”
In a statement published by Cory’s parents on Sunday, January 25, 2009, I was sadly updated on the status of these matters. The statement reads: “This case has been put on the back burner. The attackers r not confessing and Cory is the only one to tell what happened. Not enough evidence and evidence not collected for CSI investigation after the attacks. Feels like we take one step forward and five steps back. Cory will never have his freedom back as long as this keeps going on. Feels like little Chicago in Havana.
