The Havana FFA Officers attended this year’s FFA National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana on October 21st thru October 23rd. The officers took a 8-passenger van out to the convention. FFA purchased the van with the help of Chad Brown and B&B Motor. By B&B Motors helping us purchase the van, it made going to National Convention more cost effective and easier to accomplish. While out at National Convention, the officer team attended a Toby Keith Concert at the Lucas Oil Stadium. Kicking off the concert with a bang, The Eli Young Band opened up for Toby Keith. Toby Keith, fellow FFA member, lit up the stadium with his amazing pyrotechnics. He ended the show with a tribute to the all the men and women out there who risk their lives to make us safe. FFA Officers attended the first session where there was a amazing light show and music that pumped everyone up. National FFA Officers were the first on stage. They spoke about “Leading Out Loud” and what it means to really lead out loud. The National Officers talked about all their experiences with leading out loud. How it not just what you say that makes you lead out loud, but what you do. The National FFA Band and Chorus made a big entrance and then played a medley of songs. Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs was the Keynote Speaker. Mike talked about the importance of agricultural jobs on every day lives. The career show was the last place the Havana Officer team went. The career show had many booths where different AG companies, trade schools, colleges, and vendors showcases what they have to offer to the future of AG and everything involved in AG. Many opportunities were showcased whether they are about the seed companies that you will purchase seed from in the future when you own a farm to future college you will learn more about agriculture and further your self toward what opportunities may await you. | HOMECOMING WEEK | ||
![]() Monday: (photo on left) the first day of spirit week, students just got up and went to school. Senior Derek Ferree sported his robe, his pajamas, and his bed-head hair. Derek was one of the many students to dress up on Monday but the sophomores showed up the whole school by having the most spirit. ______________________ Tuesday: (photo on right) the second day of homecoming week when everyone wore their tie dye. Camryn Gann wore a tie dye shirt that she had previously got whereas others went to measures of actually making their own tie dye clothing, from their socks to their shirts. The juniors showed the most spirit Tuesday but it was a close race.

Wednesday: FFA kicked off the year with their first school wide event, their pork chop lunch. The students of Havana High School came out in forces on Wednesday September 30th to enjoy pork chops that the FFA was selling to help raise money for their many activities that host during the school year. Freshmen especially enjoyed the pork chops as it was the refreshing change from eating cafeteria food everyday. Freshmen to seniors attended the cook out on the front lawn. ______________________ Thursday: All the officers and other members of FFA helped cook, wrap, and sell the pork chops. Cody Zeeck dad, Brad Zeeck, stopped by to help cook the pork chops and try to keep up with the big demand for the chops. FFA raised a bunch of money from the event which will help make this year a great year for FFA. ______________________
Also on Thursday: It was opposite sex day at the high school. The boys of the school dressed up like girls and the girls dressed as guys. Tiffanie Bell and Brittany Davis (Left) both showed their spirit trying to help the senior win Thursdays spirit day but the sophomores managed to pull ahead and show the most spirit. ______________________ Friday: The school turned maroon and white for spirit day. Most of the school participated on Friday, more than on any other day. The juniors won the most spirit out of all the grades for the day and also the week. Seniors pulled out a win by buying the most spirit links to help support the cheerleaders. The day was finished with a pep rally where the cheerleaders got everyone pumped up for the homecoming game. Maggie Armstrong (Right) helped get everyone pumped by cheering at the pep rally. |

HHS Student Profile...by Tiffanie Bell Havana’s FFA President, Cody Zeeck, has high goals for this school year. Among his goals he hopes “to be one of the best chapters in the state.” In his few years of high school Cody has been actively progressing himself in the local and area FFA. He has been elected as the 2009-2010 Section 12 FFA Treasurer; in turn he is one of only 25 section treasurers in the state. This has given him the opportunity to collaborate with the Illinois State FFA Officers. When Cody isn’t at school improving the FFA, he is helping out on the family farm. Their family farm is where Cody raises and keeps his show cattle. Cody has been very successful this past fair season with his show cattle. He won Reserve Grand Champion Shorthorn at the Sangamon and Schulyer County Fairs. He won Grand Champion Shorthorn at the Schulyer, Menard, and Mason County Fairs. He took 3rd place at the Illinois State Fair for Lightweight Shorthorn Steer. |

The Havana Ag Classes hope to have that answer for you in the near future. The Ag Classes are selling cookie dough as a fundraiser in hopes that they can raise enough money to purchase a WeatherBug Tracking Station. The station would benefit the children at the school and also everyone in the community. You will be able to get instant weather updates, by signing up for them, on your phone, computer, and other wire less devices. The students will be able to learn from, and use software to help them better understand the weather and how it affects every part of agriculture. The tracking station has 27 different real-time weather measurements. The Ag Classes will be selling cookie dough from now through to October 8th. If you would like to purchase cookie dough you just need to find a student in an Ag class or contact Mr. Phil Foster at the Havana High School. |

At left, Illinois State Reporter Ellen Reeder with Havana FFA Officers Tiffanie Bell and Cody Zeeck and Greenhands: Michael Varley, Jesse Graham, Tyler Danner, and Tiffany Holliday at Workshops.
Tiffanie Bell and Cody Zeeck, of the Havana FFA Chapter attended the District 3 Reporter Workshop. The workshop was held at Macomb High School on September 15, 2009. Several reporters from District 3 attended this event. Ellen Reeder, Illinois State Reporter, assisted at the event. The workshop focused on teaching the students how to contact the media, report news, and take pictures. In addition, reporters learned their duties for the coming year. Students not only learned how to improve their reporting abilities, but also improved their leadership and communication skills through a fun mixer. We met many of the other FFA reporters from different districts and shared ideas and thoughts with each other. We talked about ways to improve our FFA Chapter and what new events are out there for FFA members to participate in. While Tiffanie and Cody attended their workshop, the Greenhands attended the WIU Greenhand Workshop. A Greenhand is a first year FFA member. The Greenhands that went to the workshop were Michael Varley, Jesse Graham, Tyler Danner, and Tiffany Holliday, who are all freshmen this year at Havana High School. They learned leadership skills along with the many FFA opportunities that exist for them. They participated in activities that taught them more about leadership and what it means to be a leader. |
