On June 18, 2009, I developed a new feature called the "Shot of the day". I began capturing one image per day here in Havana for that spot on the front page which will give you a feel for what is going on around town on that particular day. This page will contain a record of those images, published here on a smaller scale. The original large images will be placed on the website homepage and will change daily so be sure to check it out, you never know, tomorrow may just be "your" day.

The Lady Ducks...moved to 24-4 on the season with a Monday night victory over a feisty South Fulton team. The JV Ladies had already set the pace for the evening with a commanding win in their early game. This was the last home game of the season for our Lady Ducks so it was also traditionally "Senior Night" which meant that our only Senior team member, Julie Snider was the focus of those ceremonies. As you probably know our Lady Ducks have a great deal of depth and talent in their ranks and should be a force to recon with for many years down the road. CONGRATULATIONS to Julie and her family on a great High School career and of course to all of our Lady Ducks for all your hard work and success in the regular season. Did someone say POST SEASON? Bring it on, these girls will NOT back down.

The game photos are processed and uploaded, you can see them by clicking the link below...

February 2, 2010

This was the day...when Alex Noble stepped back onto the basketball court in a regulation game. I wish I could have been there to have stood and applauded both his return and his metal. I respect this young man very much...I have been watching and photographing his skills and accomplishments on the courts for a number of years while he has set numerous records and impressive stats, but for him it was never about what he had done, it was always about the team.

In today's world it is not a common thing for someone to take responsibility for their mistakes or bad decisions. All of us have and will make mistakes but today's standards are to ignore them or pass them onto someone else, not Alex. He stood up and worked his way back and he worked hard for that step back onto the courts in Peoria Heights earlier tonight. I am sure that I am not the only one who is proud of Alex for showing the world what he is made of. He and his team will take the home court on Friday night to what I hope will be an extremely warm welcome back by the crowd for this brave young man.

WELCOME BACK ALEX! See you Friday.

Art Dufelmeier...has died.

He was and always will be a hero locally. Our HHS Football field is named after him, but Art Dufelmeier was also one of America's great heroes from WWII, being highly decorated and a POW. When it's all over and finished, many words will have been written about this man but his biggest accomplishment in life was the person he was when no one was looking. He will be long be remembered, appreciated, respected, and loved by all. Godspeed Art! The link below is an interesting story I found about Coach from the Peoria Journal Star...

by: Liz Hamilton, M.A., Chestnut Health Systems

Teenage Drinking...If you are a regular reader of this online publication, then you know Chestnut Health Systems has been providing direct prevention services to Mason County for nearly two years. During this time, we have tried to keep you informed regarding what is happening with your teens and drug and alcohol abuse in your county. Assessments looking at both youth and adults have helped to direct our prevention efforts.

From the beginning, our work in Mason County has focused on “adult acceptance of underage drinking” as a key contributing factor to the problem of underage drinking. This has been the focus because as former Mason County prevention worker Jason Blanchette often pointed out, “Alcohol kills more youth than all illegal drugs combined. It’s not just by chance that so many teenagers are drinking alcohol. It is adults who buy alcohol for minors or leave it accessible to their kids inside their own homes. Adults who don’t fully understand all the serious risks associated with underage drinking can sometimes encourage underage drinking intentionally or unintentionally.”

In light of this a survey was conducted in Mason County by Chestnut Health Systems looking at how adults feel about underage drinking. The results reveal a great strength in Mason County. Adults in Mason County are united in strong disapproval of young teen drinking with 100% of those who responded to the survey reporting a belief it would be “very wrong” for an 8th grader to drink alcohol.  These are the numbers we love to see. The ones that still need work suggest that only 60% of the respondents reported believing it is “very wrong” for a high school senior to drink alcohol, 26% feeling  it would be “wrong,” and 13% percent reporting  it would be “only a little bit wrong.” One of the reasons we would like to see individuals reporting in greater numbers that it is “very wrong” for high school seniors to drink is because  the brain is still developing into the early twenties, and the earlier members of your community begin drinking, the more likely alcohol consumption will alter the development of the brain. This altered development can lead to addiction, learning deficiencies and poor impulse control. All of these consequences are preventable if we can delay the onset of drinking.

Looking at the results by age bracket, it is clear adults younger than 35 are less likely than other adults to feel that underage drinking by high school seniors is “wrong”, and are also less likely to report seeing information related to Chestnut’s campaign that is currently running in Mason County. Additionally, adults between the ages of 35 to 44 were less likely to disapprove of underage drinking if they did not have children than were the other adults from the same age bracket who had children. This tells us we need to educate those 44 and younger about the consequences of underage consumption of alcohol paying particular attention to those without children.

As a resident of Mason County, you can continue the discussion and help with prevention efforts in your community by mentioning that you heard about the damage underage drinking can do to the developing brain. If you see some of the campaign material around town, you can point it out and use it to start a discussion with your children, friends and neighbors. This would be helpful because, as we found out from the survey, those who reported seeing or hearing information related to Chestnut’s campaign were more likely to report changing their opinions to view underage drinking  as a greater problem.

Coach Brady...brought the Havana Ducks home on Friday night to play North Fulton. He brought a good solid team that has had a tough year, but Friday night was different. I believe it is safe to say that everyone saw the real potential of this team on Friday, a well rounded team with lots of heart and hustle that has the ability to get the job done under most any circumstances...but like I said, it's been a tough year. With Alex Noble back and also Levi Bridges after receiving an injury and having to set out the recent Peoria Heights game the team is only short one senior member now, Tyler Cleer, who will be back in time for this Friday's final home game and also "Senior Night". Travis Davenport, Eric Hills, and of course Sam Kachanuk complete the list of Senior team members. There is only one Junior player on the team this year, Cole McDaniel. Cole definitely deserves a big mention as he has really stepped up this year and played a very important part on this team.

The game on Friday was a very solid win for the Ducks with plenty of depth, hustle, and deadly shooting all through the roster. Congratulations guys, see you Friday for the last home game of the season.

iDUCK Premier Show in 3,2,1...Yes, it's true...their first show is in the can and ready for everyone to see. The studio portion was shot in their new studio in the Junior High on Friday. I shot a video during the first practice session or run-through. The in-studio teams were there and getting used to the new surroundings, the director checking everything, the anchors reading their scripts, needless to say the first session was full of nervous energy by everyone, but then it was time to get down to business and to roll the camera for real. The finished product was achieved in the second take, a huge accomplishment in my book. I think you will like what these kids have done and there is lots more to follow. The link below will take you to the practice session and the finished product are below. To everyone involved in this project...you have done an absolutely AWESOME job and I am extremely proud of each and every one of you. Your energy, commitment, and creative abilities are remarkable.

I sincerely hope the business community, the community as a whole, and the parents will support this project. Mrs. Trimpe has set the bar high and makes sure this is a true learning experience for any kid who would like to join this team including a good grade average to get into the door. These awesome kids are already working on next week's show, you can bet the farm, it will be bigger and better. The "iDucks" are a great bunch of kids doing great things and learning while they go, want more information, contact Mrs. Trimpe at ttrimpe@havana126.net .

So what are you waiting for...click the link below and see what these creative kids have accomplished on their very first try...

Coach Clark...How cool would it be to be a kid who could tell his friends that his coach is a former MLB pitching star? Many kids around this area can indeed say just that. Mark Clark spends a lot of time working with kids. In the winter it's with the Park District basketball programs and in the summers it is baseball with the Youth Leagues. There are a lot of great programs locally for kids, check them out, the resumes of their coaching staff look pretty impressive to me.

A bridge less traveled...Hang in there everyone, it's February 10th and it won't be very long until the grass is green and too long...but it's just too hot to go out there and cut it today. Four seasons have we and winter is only one of them, spring will be here before you know it. The first one of you out there to see the first Robin gets a snowball for your freezer from my cousin in DC. Have a good one!

Ok, I know this is nothing new...around here lately as it seems like we have a day of sun and a day of snow, but the difference about the photo above is that I didn't take it. The photo was sent to me by my friend Sharon Linzy shown on the left in the photo. The thing that makes this photo interesting is the location. The photo was taken Friday morning and yes it snowed here on Friday morning, but it was also snowing in the above photo taken near New Orleans, Louisiana. Now I really like New Orleans but I never think of it snowing there but I guess the Colts didn't either. John Lennon once wrote, "Strange days, indeed." Thanks for the photo Sharon.

Senior Night 2010...as always was a fun night at the gym with a lot of entertaining events going on in addition to the game but it was definitely the Varsity game that was the main event of the evening. There is no doubt about it that Abingdon came to play and to bring a strong, aggressive game against the Ducks. It was quite a game but on this night the Commando's mission would end in failure as the Ducks ended their regular season on a high note and with a very positive win against the strong Abingdon team. It's been quite a year, one that despite the records and stats everyone can be proud of. Coach Brady, his staff, and of course the team did a great job.

The photos are available at the link below...

They are back on Thursday at 7:30 pm for the 3rd game of the Sectional, do not miss this one...

Pick your favorite...because both photos tell the story of tonight's game for the IHSA 1A Boys Basketball Regional Championship. Our Ducks played a great game and actually led most of the game until late in the 4th Quarter. The final tally of 52 - 46 gave the win to Lewistown. We wish you good luck in the Sectional's and to our Ducks, regardless of the records for the year, this team had a good year. It was a year of games that could have gone either way just like tonight's game. Be proud of a good season of effort, hustle, and dedication...who could ask for more. CONGRATULATIONS Ducks on a very good season.
