On June 18, 2009,
I replaced our normal long-running mast
head with a new feature called the "Shot of the day". That's right, I
will be capturing one image per day here in Havana for that spot on the
front page which will give you a feel for what is going on around town
on that particular day. This page will contain a record of those images,
published here on a smaller scale. The original large images will be
placed on the website homepage and will change
daily so be sure to check it out, you never know, tomorrow may just be
"your" day.

The "Mad About the Ducks" Show...premiers
with it's first "Show". When you talk about sports there is one person to
talk with and Bob Kuntzmann is the special guest of this first show. We
think you will enjoy this conversation between our very own "Mongo" Kolves
and Mr. K, click the link below...
An important
assembly...at Havana Junior High on Tuesday unveiled
the 36 entrants in the HAPT Poster Contest. This contest was held to create
an awareness to all about the dangers of abusing over the counter cough
medicines. Debbie Yetter was there representing HAPT, Jason Blanchette from
Chestnut, Sheriff Wayne Youell was there to support the kids and their
efforts, and of course HJHS Principal Jerry Wilson lead the many teachers
present in their support of the stand against the abuse of these dangerous
medications. As each student creating a poster was announced to the assembly
they received quite an ovation from the remaining students and supporters. I
photographed each student and they will receive a free copy of that photo,
you can see them by clicking the link below. The posters were judged and
three winners picked. The top three creators won gifts ranging from fries at
McDonalds and Hardee's, gift cards, and a free family portrait from Ted
Connolly Photography.
Posters and a battle for life...some of the HJHS
Students receive their prizes and gifts for joining the fight against the
abuse of over the counter medications from Debbie Yetter, President of the
Havana Area Prevention Team. For more about this project and a related
personal story from a brave and loving mother battling for her son's life

Mike
Silvernagle
is a great guy and friend...he is also a very
lucky guy, because his photo above is where he works. Mike owns Misaw Lake
Lodge which happens to be one of the most remote and beautiful hunting,
fishing, and resort spots on the planet. Can you imagine a hunting/fishing
resort with 5 Star meals from a famous Chef? Mike's lodge is
Saskatchewan's most remote fly-in
trophy fishing destination,1000 miles from the US border and 125 miles from
the nearest road plus
Misaw and his area has an unusual
strain of Trophy Pike, Lake Trout , and Arctic Grayling.
You must see more of the photos and information on his website, just click
the link below, and BTW, you will NOT believe his rates, got any fishermen
on your Christmas list? See you soon Mike...
The
Ducks...took
on PORTA Friday night in their only home game for the month of December. The
JV scored a win and the Varsity held their early lead into the 4th Quarter.
The Bluejays came out on top at the final buzzer. The "Mad About the Ducks"
team was on hand to shoot a location show in the stands. We will be shooting
another show with some special guests you won't want to miss. Both shows
will air early next week.
Doing the show...The
photo above is from the Mad About the Ducks show taped on Saturday morning.
Did you know that Havana had two female football players this past season?
These two brave and lovely young ladies stepped up and put on the pads for
their first season in the HHS Freshman Football Program. This interesting
show will let you meet them and learn about their experience, Coach Mark Opp
also joined us for the great conversation with show host Zac "Mongo" Kolves.
This show is
presenting a great new advertising opportunity for area businesses. This
very reasonable opportunity will not only provide a great amount of exposure
but you will be supporting the college fund's of three talented senior
students who produce the show. These guys are headed to SIU to study film
making and production. Any advertising purchased at our regular low rates
will see 50% of the sales will go the three students college piggybanks and
the other 50% for expenses of producing and airing the show. For more
information contact Zac, Seth, Derek, or myself. To view our latest show,

Reflexology...The
demo is here. Many have heard of this ancient Eastern miracle technique but
many have never seen the actual practice applied. In this continuing series,
Grace Sarff, a Certified and practicing Reflexologist shows us the
application process of this ancient healing technique. Grace will also
explain and show us the difference relationship of other similar techniques
such as acupressure. To view this demonstration, click the link below, and
for more information see Grace's ad throughout this e-publication...
Take two...The
core of the location show was done on Friday night when the Ducks took on
PORTA in their first home game of the season. The rest of the show was done
at Saturday's Lady Ducks Shootout where we caught up with a special guest...
OMG, it's Me...A
lot of the visitors will recognize Kaleb Yetter in the photo above. I chose
this particular shot of him because I know that he will have the same look
on his face when he looks at this website for the first time. A few years
ago this then young teen would come over and talk with me at ballgames and
other school events about photography. He showed a lot of promise in his
early photographs, they were very creative and this young man had a lot of
potential. I was more than happy to feature a number of his early
photographs right here on 62644.com. I am happy to tell you that Kaleb is
now studying photography at Harrington Design in Chicago.
He has just unveiled his new and first website,
http://www.kalebyetter.com .
There, he has displayed many examples of his work, some of which I recognize
from his early works. Kaleb has a great eye and doing a great job, Kaleb
keep up the great work, I am very happy and proud of what you have done.

The
ultimate decoration...Two
friends sent this to me, along with the photo there was the following story.
I couldn't resist sharing this with everyone...
"Good news is
that I truly out did myself this year with my Christmas decorations. The
bad news is that I had to take him down after 2 days. I had more people come
screaming up to my house than ever. Great stories. But two things made me
take it down. First, the cops advised me that it would cause traffic
accidents as they almost wrecked when they drove by. Second, a 55 year old
lady grabbed the 75 pound ladder almost killed herself putting it against my
house and didn't realize it was fake until she climbed to the top (she was
not happy). By the way, she was one of many people who attempted to do that.
My yard couldn't take it either. I have more than a few tire tracks where
people literally drove up my yard."

The blue
skies...of
a crisp winter day was a good day to test a new camera. It is nice to have
escaped the wrath of the recent storm which devastated neighboring states
and Illinois areas to the North and West of us. With the River continuing to
fall slowly it is once again leaving remains like this huge tree from an
unknown origin. Friday was a beautiful winter day in Central Illinois, I
hope you enjoyed it too.

New member of the team...I
don't remember ever making an announcement here that has made me happier or
more proud than this; Bob Kuntzmann has joined our "Mad About the
Ducks" Sports Show Team. I respect Bob as much as anyone I have ever
known and have long admired his honesty, integrity, knowledge, dedication,
and hard work. His knowledge and love of local sports is unmatched as is his
dedication to all students and athletes. The students involved in this team
now and in the future will learn a great deal from Bob's presence and I look
forward to taping his show each week as I know it will be interesting,
funny, and on the mark. Bob's portion of our new sports show is something
you won't want to miss, and BTW, I am thinking seriously about getting
Victoria a new rolling pin for Christmas...this could get interesting.
☺
Saturday morning Seth Lesemann taped an introductory show with Bob and Zac
"Mongo" Kolves, the show's host...click the link below to watch the show:
New Winter Fare...Many
new and interesting things are going on at Sheridan Lane's Restaurant. Their
new Winter Menu is in place and contains some interesting new items, if you
like a real home made hamburger then the hearty 1/2 pound version shown
above is for you. BTW, that bacon wrapped and grilled asparagus is really
awesome.
There is also a new Sunday Brunch Buffet and
this is some deal; things like a build your own omelet, fried chicken, and
tons of other great "stuff".
New Years is just around the corner and Sheridan
Lane has a huge event planned for the Eve. Many different levels to choose
from including limo service to and from the restaurant, there will also be
hot Chicago entertainment on board for the evening...Joshua
Skaja. For more information on any of all this or to make NYE
reservations, call Sheridan @ 309-546-2741.

A year
ago...we
faced a pretty heavy ice storm. Earlier today I was looking for a photo from
last year and came onto these images from almost exactly 1 year ago today. I
found it interesting how all this information was right there at my
fingertips, I knew it was there and had used it many times but had not
thought about how extensive all this information really is. For Example,
during the month of December 2008 I shot 2,722 photos for the website which
are now stored in one of my external hard drives. The photo above was taken
on 12-20-2008 at exactly 9:40 am, CST. It also tells me what camera I shot
this image with, what lens, and the exact settings used on the camera to
capture the image. WOW, makes me wonder what I had for breakfast that
morning, shoot, what did I have for breakfast this morning? If you would
like to go back one year and see what was going on you can do that just by
clicking the 2008 link in the banner at left. Do you want to see the rest of
the ice storm pictures from last year? Here's a shortcut for you...
Jason Blanchette...is
a great friend and asset to Mason County and Havana. For years Jason has
done a lot of talking with kids, something he loves, being his job or not.
This area has been so privileged to have Jason here to help our kids in so
many different ways. Jason is a
Community Prevention Coordinator at Chestnut Health Systems and has been
there so many times for both kids and parents alike on a personal and
professional level. His work in planning and coordinating programs or events
to get needed awareness and life saving information out to the community has
been extremely important in these difficult times. You may not know Jason
but chances are your kids do, he has worked tirelessly with area schools on
numerous programs and awareness activities.
Many changes occur at the end of a year and this year is
no exception, on December 31, 2009, Jason Blanchette will spend his last day
serving Mason County families. Even though this is a loss to Havana and the
rest of Mason County, Jason is off to Boston to further his education. All
of us owe this great young man a huge THANK YOU, for all he has done here.
We also want to give Jason our best wishes as he continues his career in
such an important field. Again, thank you Jason, for your hard work and for
your sincere caring about others, you will be long remembered here.

Our Park
District Rocks!...It is a wonderful thing to be
with a bunch of kids having fun. It is also a great thing to be with a bunch
of adults having fun. You know, that pretty much sums up a big part of what
our Havana Park District does. They have many great programs for both our
youth and adults alike. Last year I became involved with most of these
activities by photographing those participating in these activities and
donating the photographs to the Park District to sell at a profit which goes
for further program development for our kids and to provide them with
activities in a good, clean, and fun environment. Last year the Park
District started their Annual Christmas Dance and it was an instant hit. I
was there and the atmosphere was electric, the music was hot and loud, the
young ladies and gentlemen were all dressed up...and looking "Marvelous"! To
say they had a great time would be a huge understatement. Tonight (Friday,
December 18th) the Second Annual Christmas Dance will again take place at
the Chester Center and I will again be very happy to be there having almost
as much fun as the kids are. Many thanks to the Park District for all these
great activities, keep up the great work. To find out more about your Park
District and all these important programs and activities begin with the link
below then continue on to their website at a link there.
I think we had fun!...I
think we should do this at least once a month. The group shot above was just
before the dance was over. We had a great time shooting photos of everyone,
the music was great, but the kids were a little better dancers than I was,
but then I never did dance very well. It was great seeing everyone including
the chaperones having that much fun. I will have the photos processed for
Angie tomorrow, just keep in touch with her to get your photos, remember you
can always get more from her if you want, it all goes to the Park District
to have more dances and other fun events like this. Thanks everyone, you
made my day, all of you have a very Merry Christmas, and I just may see you
at the basketball game tomorrow morning.
HJHS Basketball...The
Canton Little Giants came to town Saturday morning for a couple of games on
the Jr High courts. The photos from the game are up, just click the link
below. The crew from "Mad About the Ducks" were also at the game doing a
show, it is currently in post production editing and will be uploaded Sunday
evening.
Bob Kuntzmann
provides us with all the totals and inside information from his office
headquarters, and all who know Bob knows there will always be more. The rest
of the team has been busy out on the Havana sports beat for an interesting
location report. Join the "Mad about the Ducks" fan team and get the real
story on Havana sports, click the link below...
Not
even Bullets can bring down the Ducks...
Coach Jerry Wilson's Lady Ducks have been flying pretty
high again this year. Monday night a tough Williamsville Lady Bullets team
came to town with guns blazing. Two fast paced games including an OT session
in the varsity game left the Williamsville girls out of ammunition and our
girls 12-1 for the young season. The girls full court press is coming alive
once again this year and is becoming a trademark for Lady Duck basketball.
Come out and see these girls play some basketball, you will be glad you did.
All of our Ducks basketball teams are headed off for holiday tournaments.
Coach Nathan Brady's Boys Varsity Ducks team will be returning home on
January 5th after a long December away from the roost. To view or purchase
photos from the Lady Ducks twin victories over Williamsville last night

to have a piece of Havana's history. Cost is $13.50 each or 2 for $25.00.
Profits from the calendar go to the Building & Memorial Fund of the Havana
Public Library District. Calendars available to pick up in the library

The night before Christmas...brings
the end of shopping, the frantic secret present wrapping sessions, and all
the warm, fuzzy stories of Christmas cheer and giving stuffed into your
email in-box. In fact there are many great stories of Christmas giving and
sharing of the joy and meaning of the Christmas holiday out there. I
received one related story and was asked to share it at a time when many
local folks and local businesses are experiencing hard times in our
depressed local economy. After verifying the story I have decided to share
it with all of you. Not long ago someone dropped off a nice box of Christmas
cookies at a Department of the City of Havana to be shared by the employees
there. This recent gesture of Christmas spirit and sharing was made by a
local business person who is a big promoter of the new "Shop Havana"
campaign. One initially thinks that this is a great thing to actually
purchase gifts for hardworking and deserving City Employees from local
businesses who can certainly use the sales and of course every dollar spent
in Havana also creates needed sales taxes to run the City. I have been told
that the City Employees enjoyed their cookies which disappeared far to
quickly. It was at the time when they were sharing their last ration of the
cookies as a group when someone noticed the sticker on the bottom of the
container holding the cookies purchased at a business located in Manito. I
was asked, "Why would someone ask everyone else to spend their money in
Havana when this person has a history of not doing so?" I am sorry but I can
not answer that question.

Merry Christmas Everyone...I
received a poem written by
LCDR Jeff Giles
based in
Al Taqqadum, Iraq.
Please find a moment to read this, you will be glad you did...
The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.
The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know,
Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.
"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..
To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."
"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.
I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.
I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."
"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."
Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

It's over for
now...but we will do it
all over again next year. I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and are
getting ready for a very Happy New Year.

Were you dreaming?...Sometimes
they do come true.
December 28 & 29, 2009
Looking
back?...Not only is it the end of the year,
but also the end of the first decade of the 21st Century. It seems like
only yesterday we were getting ready to party like it was 1999, watch
all the computers crash at midnight, and tons of other things predicted
to happen that night at midnight. New Year's Eve is lots of things to
many people; for some a time to look back and others a time to look
forward. Often both views can be equally as unclear as we can never know
what will happen tomorrow, we can only plan our day and see what
happens. Looking back in history and our lives has many happy times
along with sad ones but it is what has shaped our presence and possibly
our future. The other option is to do neither of these and just live for
the moment, which ever option you choose enjoy it.
A note on
the above photo...it was taken in the 60's from the second
story of the old Zemple Hardware building of the Orange and Main Street
intersection. I took a photo just like this back then but I can not
positively say this is that photo and this particular one was emailed to
me a couple of years ago, interesting.

A beautiful day...the
battle of the viruses is over and I won! This alone made it a beautiful day
but it really was a beautiful winter day in Havana. Sure it was cold as
winter is supposed to be but there was no wind and a nice warm sun as our
little friends above can agree with.

Lyle F.
"Sonny" Connolly...loved the outdoors with
a very strong passion. His long-time job as the US Postmaster in Bath,
Illinois, did keep him confined inside for 40 hours per week but he made
up for that many times over. He loved to work with his hands on his
small farm North of town which was his real full-time job after punching
out at work he would be in the fields 'till midnight. There was always
something to do on the small farm in those days, when it wasn't crop
related it was fixing this or that and then there was the livestock
which needed constant attention. He worked hard but he was used to it as
he was born in the middle of the Great Depression and times then were
really hard. The Illinois River was always his play and work ground and
hunting and fishing not only his greatest loves but a means of 3 squares
a day. He could always find and bare hand that huge catfish hiding in
the old stump long before it was called the sport of noodeling and was
always the first kid to work all day mowing a huge lawn with an old push
mower for a quarter per day and lunch. He grew up fast just like
everyone else in those days, but he grew up strong and straight and
always considered his word to be his greatest possession. Like most in
those days he served his Country durring the war but headed straight for
Bath immediately afterwards because it was home. Nature and the outdoors
was a huge part of his life and it treated him well, but he always gave
back more than he took away. Many years ago he left this world a much
better place because of the footprints he left here...
